QLD – Charleville SDE Kilometre Club
In 2016 the school was contacted by the Regional Project Officer for iAIM (Increasing Activity & Intelligent Minds) to start a Kilometre Club. It is run for 2-4 weeks each term as a personal, family and Sports House challenge to increase the physical fitness of students, Home Tutors and teachers.
Points can be achieved by:
- completing a circuit and tracking the number of kilometres completed in a day while running, swimming, bicycling or paddling.
- complete a 15min fitness / yoga circuit.
- participating in school events.
- or using the physical activity point board to track every day activities that promote fitness.
Individual points earn students brag tags and stickers and add to their Sports House to help them race around Queensland. The team with the most kilometres at the end of the year wins the Km Club trophy. Our students are enthusiastic enough to create vignettes to motivate other students to participate in Km Club and can be watched on the school’s YouTube Channel. Find out more at the Charleville School of Distance Education YouTube Channel.
Km Club is constantly evolving to ensure students stay enthusiastic and motivate. Teachers incorporate Brain Breaks into their daily on air lessons which may include dance and movement, exercises, yoga and body spelling. This year at our annual Kickstart Conference we developed a new event called ‘Colour Skirmish’. Students and teachers completed a kilometre circuit (walk/run) and were able to spray each other with coloured water for 10 seconds when the bell rang. The enthusiasm and excitement of the students, and a few teachers, ensured that skirmish went for well over an hour.
This will now become an annual event for Charleville SDE due to its success and popularity. Currently our teachers are looking at how to include a fitness circuit endurance event at our upcoming Sports Muster and a modified Birdman event at Swim Muster.
